Heat Pump Installation
A ductless heat pump — often called a mini split — is the most efficient way to heat and cool a home on southern Vancouver Island. Our climate is close to ideal for them: winters that rarely dip below −5 °C, and summers that increasingly need cooling. Pacific Fireplaces has been installing heating equipment in Greater Victoria since 2000, and our HVAC technicians install ductless systems across Victoria, Saanich, Central Saanich, Sidney, the Peninsula and the Westshore.
What a ductless heat pump installation involves
Most installations take one day. A single-head system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor head — usually in a main living area — while multi-head systems run two to five indoor heads from a single outdoor unit to cover bedrooms and separate zones.
- Site assessment. We look at your home’s layout, insulation, existing heating and electrical panel, then recommend a system size. Every system we install is an inverter unit, which modulates its output rather than simply cycling on and off, so sizing does not have to be perfect to the BTU — being in the right range is what matters. Getting it badly wrong still costs you: undersized and it will not keep up on the coldest days; significantly oversized and you have paid for capacity you never use, with some loss of dehumidification in summer.
- Placement. Indoor heads need clear airflow; outdoor units need drainage, service clearance and a spot where noise won’t carry to a bedroom window or a neighbour’s patio.
- Electrical. The system gets its own dedicated 240-volt circuit. The load is smaller than most people expect — a single head draws well under what an electric range pulls — so a 100 amp panel is rarely the obstacle it gets made out to be. What actually decides it is how much of your panel is already spoken for. We look at that during the site visit and tell you then, while you are still choosing.
- Installation and commissioning. We mount the outdoor unit and run the refrigerant lines through a single small wall penetration. Before anything is charged, those lines are pressure-tested and purged with nitrogen — the step that finds a leak while it is still easy to fix, and keeps scale out of the line set. Then we pull a vacuum to draw out the air and moisture, and charge the system with refrigerant.
- Walkthrough. We show you how to actually run it — which matters more than most people expect (see below).
Running a heat pump properly
Heat pumps behave differently from furnaces and baseboards. They are most efficient when left at a steady temperature rather than turned down at night and back up in the morning — the deep setbacks that save money with electric baseboards cost money with a heat pump. They also deliver gentler, longer air cycles, so the air from the head feels cooler than furnace air even while the room holds temperature. Homeowners who understand these two things are far happier with their systems, which is why we spend time on it at handover instead of leaving you with a manual.
Heat pump and fireplace together — a Victoria-specific advantage
We are unusual in Greater Victoria: we install both heat pumps and fireplaces, so we can advise on how they work together rather than selling you one and ignoring the other. Two practical reasons that matters here:
- Winter storm outages. A heat pump needs electricity. A gas fireplace with a standing pilot or battery-assisted ignition keeps a room warm when the power goes out — something Island homeowners think about every December.
- Cost balancing. On the coldest days a heat pump works hardest and its efficiency drops. Many of our customers run the heat pump as the everyday workhorse and light the gas fireplace during cold snaps and evenings, which is comfortable and often cheaper.
Rebates
Rebate eligibility has changed several times in recent years, and now depends mostly on what you heat with today. Programs are income-tested and tiered, and the rules move — so rather than quote figures that go stale, we check what you may be eligible for as part of the quote, and provide the paperwork installers are required to supply.
Why homeowners choose us
- A second-generation family business, installing in Greater Victoria since 2000
- Ticketed / Red Seal gas fitters and Red Seal HVAC technicians on staff — not subcontracted crews
- We service and maintain what we install, including annual cleaning, and we service other brands too
- A real showroom on Keating Cross Road where you can see equipment before you buy
